In a time where (hopefully) all companies are switching to remote working, most workers do not know how to make the change into the remote working lifestyle. Here at Combined we have set up our company guidelines for our employees, but we thought to spread it to everyone who might be facing this challenge.
Here are some tips from us at Combined to help you achieve success during this new remote working lifestyle:
1. Find A Workplace
It is vital to designate your workspace from home. Many workers have a work-balance life which in turn means they typically do not bring work home. What does this mean? Just as you thought, many employees do not have a desk at home to work at. This is a serious challenge many face with this current pandemic. There’s no time to go buy a desk right now just to find a solution to this problem. However, improvise with your current or potential workspace. Have a dinner table that can serve as your desk for the time being? Use it. End of story, it is essential to use what you have and not explore different options just for the temporary remote working. Now evaluate the space you have for yourself and now for your family. Do you have kids that need to stay up to date with their learning? Set a space for them as well so they can be comfortable during their home education.
2. Determine Your Mindset
Determining your mindset is key for anyone working at home. It is a whole different element to work at home than it is working in the office. Employees must now train their mindset to start the day as normal, but essentially know how to shift the perspective of “working” and “home life”. Knowing when your day begins and ends along with breaks is important to the mental health of your employees.
3. Structure Your Day
The day itself is composed of your working hours, yet now those working hours at home. How does the shift change now that you are at home? Establishing clear To-Do lists for your day is key. Knowing what you need to accomplish and having prioritized all objectives will create a sense of structure. Talk with your boss or supervisor to see what exactly you need to prioritize during this time period of working remote. DON’T FORGET to take breaks and lunch in order to relax throughout the day.
4. Stay Connected To Colleagues
You may enjoy your work hours now that you are remote, but eventually (most of you) will miss the social aspect of going into work. When creating your work schedules it is important to pencil in some social time. The typical banter that you might do with your officemates is still needed to cultivate relationships and to make working on projects easier.
5. Have Designated Work Clothes
Don’t be the person that is in pajamas when there is a need to have a video conference call. It is unprofessional and if you are speaking with clients and they want to see you, are you dressed enough to be presentable. Web Cameras typically will show you from the waist up, so food for thought, dress professionally from the waist up. It is important to keep the routine of getting dressed as if you were going to the office. If you generally wake up, shower, do your hair and get dressed, continue to do that regardless of working remotely.
6. Reduce Distractions
Distractions are a key annoyance of working at home. The office is a great place because most places set limitations to what can and cannot distract you. At home, no one is watching you work. You still need to get work done, but will you have your phone out, tv on or have social media channels open on your web browser? If you are the type of person that can’t handle these distractions while working, eliminate them. Your workspace can be an important aspect in limiting distractions. Be in a place where you are comfortable, yet in a position to be successful.
7. Determine The End Of Your Workday
How do you determine the end of your workday when work never really stops? Structuring the day in a way that lets you finish your To-Do lists and allows for breaks is the start. Setting a goal of a set time or after a certain task is complete can be viable options to end your workday. Finding the new remote work-life balance will be increasingly difficult during our current situation
